Dr. Raul Peña is an experienced ophthalmologist and provider of blade-free LASIK (also known as IntraLASIK) and Zyoptix™ custom LASIK to patients from McAllen, Harlingen, Brownsville, and elsewhere in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Blade-free LASIK is a refractive eye surgery procedure that improves vision and reduces or eliminates dependence on glasses and contact lenses. Most blade-free LASIK patients achieve vision that is better than 20/20 as a result of the surgery. Most importantly, it is the safest, most precise, laser vision technology available today.
Blade-free LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis), is a relatively quick and painless procedure that takes less than 15 minutes in Dr. Peña’s McAllen office. Dr. Peña will begin by meeting with you in a blade-free LASIK consultation in which he will discuss your goals and determine if you are an appropriate candidate. The blade-free LASIK procedure permanently changes the shape of the cornea, treating myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism by properly focusing light on the retina.
Those who have thin corneas or corneal diseases are not considered good candidates for LASIK. Dr. Peña's IntraLASIK procedure increases the chances that these patients can undergo blade-free LASIK surgery. However, if a patient is still not a blade-free LASIK candidate, Crystalens®, Acrysof® ReSTOR®, or ReZoom™ intraocular lenses may be suitable alternatives. Our free consultation is an important first step, and Dr. Peña will take the time to thoroughly discuss any concerns you may have. Most people, however, are excellent candidates for blade-free LASIK. At our McAllen office serving patients from Brownsville and elsewhere in the Rio Grande Valley, we take every step to ensure that you are as informed about your procedure as possible.
Zyoptix™ custom blade-free LASIK is also performed in our Rio Grande Valley office, providing an unsurpassed level of precision. In this blade-free LASIK procedure, Dr. Peña uses Zyoptix™ technology by Bausch and Lomb to develop a precise map of how light travels through the eye. He then compares this personalized map of each patient’s eye to a map that displays the way light would travel through an eye with perfect vision. By providing custom blade-free LASIK to his patients in the Rio Grande Valley, Dr. Peña is able to develop a treatment plan that is unique to each patient, allowing for precisely individualized blade-free LASIK vision correction.
The detailed diagram of your eye is used to guide the excimer laser, enabling Dr. Peña to treat “high order” aberrations in addition to myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. High order aberrations have been found to contribute to roughly 20 percent of a normal eye’s visual defects. After the diagram of your eye is mapped, custom blade-free LASIK with the Zyoptix™ laser vision correction system is performed at our McAllen office with the special care that comes with Dr. Peña's laser vision correction expertise. Many blade-free LASIK patients at Dr. Peña’s McAllen office are candidates for Zyoptix™ custom blade-free LASIK and IntraLASIK because high order aberrations have been linked to visual glare and halos, two possible side effects of conventional blade-free LASIK. In other words, by treating high order aberrations, Zyoptix™ blade-free custom LASIK and IntraLASIK have improved on the already safe and effective blade-free LASIK procedure.
Zyoptix™ from Bausch and Lomb allows us to provide a new level of blade-free LASIK at our McAllen, Texas office. Zyoptix™ combines Zywave™ technology, which recognizes and treats microscopic abnormalities in the lens of the eye, to customize a blade-free LASIK treatment that is truly personalized for you. By beaming a low power laser light into the eye and precisely measuring its refractive abnormalities, Zyoptix™ is able to measure both low and high order aberrations in the cornea, making precise adjustments to compensate for the refractive aberrations that are unique to each individuals eye.
If you choose to undergo blade-free LASIK surgery at our McAllen office, our helpful and knowledgeable staff will make an appointment for you to see Dr. Peña. During blade-free LASIK surgery, anesthetic eye drops will be used so Dr. Peña can perform the IntraLASIK procedure with minimal to no discomfort. A flap will then be made in the thin top layer of the cornea. This flap is then gently folded back to expose the corneal tissue. This allows Dr. Peña to use an excimer laser to perform the LASIK procedure.
During the blade-free LASIK procedure at our McAllen office serving Brownsville, Harlingen, and surrounding areas, Dr. Peña uses the excimer laser to precisely remove parts of the corneal tissue in order to change its shape and correct for myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. This process takes only a few minutes. The corneal flap is then gently replaced and will heal naturally, without the need for sutures. Blade-free LASIK and Zyoptix™ custom blade-free LASIK patients of Dr. Peña can expect to notice immediate improvements in their vision.
