A smiling woman in a white roomPatients in and around the McAllen area can count on the eye care specialists at Peña Eye Institute. We use the most advanced technology and techniques available to improve the overall vision of our patients. This includes custom LASIK, an advanced laser eye surgery that addresses refractive errors.

Since custom LASIK is often misunderstood--especially in how it's different from traditional LASIK--we'd like to use this blog post to go over the benefits of custom LASIK.

About Custom LASIK

Custom LASIK surgery is an advanced refractive surgery procedure that is performed in order to improve the clarity and quality of a patient's vision. This is done by having a precise surgical laser reshape the cornea and improve the focus of light on the retina. After having custom LASIK performed, patients will no longer require corrective lenses (i.e., glasses and contacts).

Isn't all LASIK surgery technically custom?

Technically yes, but custom LASIK is much different than the LASIK of the past.

Custom LASIK uses precise digital mapping technology. This digital mapping technology is used to scan the patient's corneas and identify various imperfections of the corneal surface. This means identifying even the most minute imperfections in corneal contour and making it possible to address lower order aberrations and higher order aberrations.

Lower Order Aberrations

Lower order aberrations are the common refractive errors of which many people are familiar. These include:

  • Nearsightedness (myopia)
  • Farsightedness (hyperopia)
  • Astigmatism

Higher Order Aberrations

Higher order aberrations mean minute imperfections on the corneal surface that cause vision problems that are more difficult to treat, such as:

  • Glare
  • Halos
  • Starbursts
  • Double vision
  • Poor contrast sensitivity
  • Poor night vision

Custom LASIK Treats Both Higher and Lower Order Aberrations

While traditional LASIK was only able to address lower order aberrations, custom LASIK is able to treat both lower order aberrations and higher order aberrations. This is only possible thanks to the digital mapping technology that pinpoints minute corneal imperfections.

Better-Quality Vision Overall

By treating lower order aberrations as well as higher order aberrations, custom LASIK patients experience much better overall vision quality when compared to traditional LASIK patients. This means a greater chance of achieving perfect vision as well as fewer issues with the higher order aberrations noted above.

Reduced Chance of Human Error

In addition to improved vision quality, the laser used for custom LASIK surgery is controlled by a computer. This means that the chances of surgical errors and human errors are drastically cut down. By doing this, custom LASIK is not just more effective than traditional LASIK but much safer as well.

Custom LASIK Is a Great Step Forward in Eye Care

As technology continues to evolve, we intend to remain at the forefront to ensure that patients receive exceptional care. With this in mind, custom LASIK is currently cutting-edge, and we are pleased to help patients see more clearly by using this state-of-the-art technology.
